Remember when you turned 21 and couldn’t wait to make it legal? Did you go out and have a cocktail? What did you drink? Perhaps you had a Singapore Sling or Long Island Iced Tea or Pina Colada or Margarita or Jell-O shots with Vodka? Whatever you drank you probably remember because it was a rite of passage.

Whether you call them spirits (which actually seems kind of old fashioned), cocktails, or hard liquor we as a culture seem to find a fascination with spirits perhaps because initially we have to wait until we’re old enough to drink legally, plus their advertising mystique sucks us in as well as their seductively colored and shaped glass bottles.

The popularity of cocktails has a life of their own based on individual boutique liquor branding. After the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, the martini died. But in the early 90s, the martini flowed back into popularity with a vengeance. Martinis now seem to be re-inventing itself as still the darling drink of the decade, and then some.

You’ll need a blender (a must have kitchen appliance) when you’re ready to endulge. Although ready-to-drink cocktails have made it really easy, so you don’t have to be bar hand.

Do we still have drink stereotypes, dictating what’s a “girly drink”? What’s your imbibing pleasure? Let us know…..
