Making Candied Orange Peel is a quick, fun activities to do with kids that everyone enjoys – and it is chic enough for your fanciest party. I did this project with my 11-year old niece, Hannah, and she did most of the work!. If you’ve never made “candy“, then this is a great recipe to start with to give you confidence.
- 2 medium oranges
- 1-1/3 c. sugar
- 1/3 c. water
- sugar for coating
Cut peels of oranges lengthwise into quarters, cutting just through the pulp to the surface of the fruit. Pry back the quartered peel with a spoon. Scrape away the soft, white part inside the peel. If white pith is left on, the peel will be bitter. Cut peel into 3/8-inch-wide strips. Wrap and refrigerate peeled fruit for another use.
In a 2-quart saucepan, combine the 1-1/3 c. of sugar and the water. Cover and bring to boiling. Add orange peel strips. Return to boiling, stirring constantly to dissolve sugar. Reduce heat. Cook, uncovered, over medium-low heat. Mixture should boil at a moderate, steady rate over entire surface. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until peel is almost translucent.
Using a slotted spoon, remove peel from syrup, allowing it to drain. Transfer peel to a wire rack set over waxed paper. Set cooked peel aside until cool enough to handle but still warm and slightly sticky. Roll peel in additional sugar to coat. Continue drying on the rack for 1-2 hours. Store, tightly covered, in a cool, dry place for up to 1 week. Or, freeze for up to 6 months. Makes 48 pieses (about 2 cups). Only 7 calories per piece!

Mary
That looks easy enough. Thanks for all the photos.
Are you going to use them for nibbles or use them for food adornment?
Hi
It is really easy and fun and the photos are great.
I remember when i was a child loving it and i still love it today, thanks.
Personally, I’m going to eat them as a special treat throughout the holidays. I experimented and tried dropping one in my coffee but I did not notice any benefit from it.
