Make Your Own Pure Vanilla Extract
3 Comments Published by Mary Johnson July 5th, 2009 in Foodie Gift Ideas.A couple of years ago, I got a fun present – it was a kit that included everything I needed to make my own pure vanilla extract. Somebody made a lot of money on that kit because the truth is, you don’t need a kit at all. There are only three things you need and here is the recipe.
Pure Vanilla Extract
- 2 Vanilla Beans
- Vodka
- 1 glass bottle with a lid
Put the vanilla beans into the bottle. Pour the vodka into the bottle to cover the vanilla beans. Put into the pantry and forget for a couple of months to let the vanilla infuse info the vodka.
What I have found is that you can reuse the vanilla beans once by pouring more vodka into the bottle, but after that, you really need some fresh vanilla beans. Try these Premium Bourbon-Madagascar Vanilla Beans – 16 beans for only $14.95 and enjoy the experience of making your own pure vanilla extract.
This would make a great gift idea for the holidays and you really need to start now so they will be ready to use.

That sounds like a brilliant idea. You can design your own label and make it truly yours.
What about 3V – very vanilla vodka
One year a friend of mine was experimenting with vanillas and gave her lucky friends (of which I was one) a trio of vanillas. She made batches each with Rum, Vodka and white Brandy. There are subtle taste differences in each but they are all marks above the store-bought variations.
Rum & Brandy too? How clever. I would never have thought to experiment. Thanks for the tip.
