I think that this is a serious issue. There is a real problem now with the genetic make up of the corn raised in the United States — there is no genetic variety — they all have been bred to stand tall, be resistant to the same diseases, and accommodate our modern harvesting machinery.
With our country moving to ethanol as an alternative to oil to make our gasoline, can you imagine the devasation of our lifestyle and culture should there be a new disease introduced that kills off our corn crop? It would be equivalent to the potato famine in Ireland.
