Memorial Day brings the start of the outdoor dining season for most of the United States. Stores are dense with grills and grilling equipment in all price ranges. You can have a heavy duty upscale stainless steel Lynx grill that’s been praised in the Robb Report, a two-burner gas grill, or a simple hibachi.

Whatever your price point or pleasure, think about grilling something new and different this summer season.

Last week’s Parade magazine featured an entire how-to video on things to grill. Seventy percent of us cook burgers first and then chicken and steak; 40 percent of us make hot dogs; and only 12 percent do fish. Fish can be a bit tricky.

Here are some things that I’ve grilled in the past…vegetables, sausages, peaches with balsamic glaze and bleu cheese, tofu, shrimp, and pizza.

A few comments…grilled peaches or pineapple is very impressive and easy to do. It’s an easy WOW and a good use for summer fruit bounty. Nectarines will do too. The grilled shrimp can be eaten as a main course or put on skewers with grilled vegetables and even grilled pineapple or tossed into a salad for a lighter touch.

Pizza is really fun to do because you can gather a crowd to help with the toppings and quite frankly no one expects pizza on the grill. If you use prepared dough, it’s very and memorable.

So don’t limit yourself to the same old, same old. There are many things that you can grill, grillfriend.

What have you grilled lately?
