Feed Me Bubbe
Published by Mary Johnson May 23rd, 2007 in Cooking Schools, Family Traditions, Food on Film.I am not Jewish. So when I came across the website Feed Me Bubbe I felt like I was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz — experiencing things I had never seen before in a strange and wonderous land.
Bubbe is the Yiddish word for “Grandma”. Feed Me Bubbe is an amateur cooking website containing videos (produced by her grandson Avrom) of a little old Jewish grandmother cooking traditional Jewish recipes in her own kitchen.
What a kitchen! It was from another era. I saw a frying pan that my mother had. And her lovely, old fashioned stove, which had a vertical side oven, was most unusual.
Bubbe is becoming quite a celebrity. I viewed her cooking video (Episode #15) where she prepared Kasha Varnishkes (Kasha with Bow Tie Pasta) — a substitute for potatoes or rice. At the beginning, her grandson interrupted her to introduce two guests also filming her in her kitchen – one from a national magazine! She wasn’t fazed a bit. I loved it!
I highly recommend visiting Feed Me Bubbe, if for nothing else to get warm fuzzies that only grandmothers can give.
CoCo,
I so remember cooking with my Bubbe.
My Bubbe Dora would make challah (egg bread) from scratch. She never measured; she just made. The challah you buy in the store now is crap compared to her beautiful golden loves. Hers was a whole different consistency, challah from the old country.
Bubbe also made everything from scratch and her apple pie was the best. My brother and I still talk about her apple pie. Again no recipe; she just made.
She and I would sit down in the middle of the day and at a very young age I would drink tea with her from a glass. It was the tea that came in a tin and I believe it was called Swee-Touch-Nee or something like that. The glass was always too hot for me to hold but I felt grown up.
I miss my Bubbe so.
Thanks for sharing this. I loved watching Bubbe’s video (episode #15)! That relationship between her and her grandson is priceless to watch. I also had a grandmother I cooked with, and whose handwritten letters (remember those?) always included what she was fixing for dinner last night.
The suggestion they made about recording our own Bubbe and seniors and sharing what they can teach us, whatever that skill/talent may be also hit home. It’s a fantastic idea, and one I wish I’d been able to do before they passed away.
