I know you’re out there. Currently 51 percent of women are not married and a good percentage of those women are not attached, partnered, or dating much to the dismay of match.com. Here comes the Hallmark holiday for lovers, so what are you going to do about it?

Fortunately, it lands on a Wednesday so it’s not that big of a deal, not like a weekend night anyway. Yet, I think if you have some friends who are similarly unattached, try on some of these ideas.

Forget about going to a restaurant because Valentines dinners are overpriced and restaurants are overtaxed so service and food quality often lacks.

Start with a festive cocktail like a pomegranate martini. Although there are a lot of recipes around, this requires no simple syrup and no pomegranate syrup which makes it all the easier.

The best thing to do is eat and drink in. Instead of the usual potluck or Chinese takeout, try spending the evening cooking your own Chinese meal. Or you can assign each guest to bring  one thing such as an unusual cheese, artisan bread, olives from the olive bar, and a pate then serve a good wine and chocolates for dessert. A menu of high-end grazing is always fun and a little decadent.

Whatever you do, do it as a choice and in good spirits. It might also be a time to set goals — personal and professional — for the next three months. New Years resolutions are all forgotten and spring (according to the ground hog) is right around the corner.

Be a little self indulgent and hire a manicurist to come in and give you all manicures. Or for some fun, hire a tarot card reader, or better yet – a tarot card reader AND a manicurist.

Do you have any other ideas for Valentines Day for the rest of us?
