Sassy confession time: “I prefer beer to wine.”

It takes guts to say this in certain crowds. It is on the par of saying you are an “atheist” in a room full of fundamental christians. You instantly get the feeling that you have just been judged as less worthy.

I remember my first exposure in a social setting to beer. Admittedly a late bloomer, at the age of 19 I was invited to my first college dorm party where beer was in abundance. I drank it and can’t say I really liked it at the time. Of course, it was only 3.2% — so watery tasting — is there any wonder?

Fast forward to today — 30 countries later with a little living behind me, I have become more confident about myself and my choices.

I have learned to appreciate that there are many things to explore and enjoy about beer. I have experienced real “smoke beer” in Bamberg, Germany where it originated, (http://worldofbeer.com/9903/bamberg1.html) and have fond memories drinking a cold glass of fresh beer in a beer garden overlooking the picturesque rolling hills of the German countryside.

My preference today? I like dark beers and order them whenever I get a chance.

You are very lucky to have experienced what you just described.

I love both beer and wine and although I have not traveled as much, I have tasted a few foreign beers.

I like dark Mexican beers. My favorite: Indio. It is not easy to come by in Texas, but anytime I take a trip to Mexico, I bring a case.

    Totally worth it.
