Celebrate the rich tastes, smells and variations of tamales from the Southwest and Mexico at the 12th Annual Tucson Tamal & Heritage Festival. Held every year on the first Saturday of December, this festival has become a Tucson tradition, marking the beginning of the holiday season.
It all happens on Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at AVA Amphitheater for this free, open to the public event. Enjoy live Tejano and mariachi bands, DJs, Azteca and Folklorico dancers; various artisan goods including jewelry, bead work, and art; farmers market vendors with t-shirts, soaps made of goats’ milk, and dried fruit; as well as tacos, fry bread, desserts, aguas frescas, roasted corn and of course tamales!
Don’t miss the celebrated tamale contest, where participants compete to prove they make the best tamales in town. The contest is judged in four categories: traditional red, green corn, gourmet and sweet. Cash prizes from $150 to $500 are given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category, with the top prize of $750 going to the best all-around tamale winner.
