What’s your favorite dish to cook?

I don’t cook, at least not in the sense this question implies, though heat is often applied to my food at home. I leave cooking up to the professionals and to amateurs who enjoy it. No one asks movie critics about the favorite film they’ve made. Dining writers need to write well about what they eat and to have an expansive, adventurous palate; chefs need to cook well.

What’s the best or most memorable meal you have eaten lately?

I was a co-host with Matt Russell on On the Menu Live this past weekend (October 29) and three dishes from Maynard’s were provided for the occasion: Barrio Bruschetta – grilled local Barrio Bread baguette, figs, prosciutto, burnt honey, herbed Boursin cheese, arugula; Riesling Braised Lamb Shank – braised lamb shank, red chimichurri, crispy Brussels sprouts, charred onion pommes purée, roasted leek pan jus; and dry Aged Prime New York Strip – 12 oz. Niman Ranch Prime NY strip, red wine caramelized onions, hotel butter, chive and potato croquettes, string beans.

I’m taking this from the menu because I was too busy eating to take notes. It was all amazing and, for some reason, it wasn’t all devoured on the spot and I got to take home leftovers.                               ediejarolim1web-2-e1475515680196-edie

What’s your favorite food city? Why?

I grew up in New York City and it’s still unbeatable for many things – for example, deli, Greek coffee shops, Indian food… ethnic food in general. By the time I left, you could have Burmese food delivered to your door. But fine dining there is beyond my budget, which is usually not the case for Tucson. And nothing beats Tucson for Mexican food, and the fact that you don’t have to wait to get in the door.

A good meal is not complete without … ?

Wine or beer. Oh, yeah, and good company. I’m supposed to say that, right?

My 3 favorite restaurants are:

My three favorites change on any given day. It’s like asking me what my favorite book is. It’s often the one I’m reading at the moment. I’m like that with restaurants. I will say my go-to before movies and in general for an easy meal is Sauce; I love their thin crust pizza and generous salads. And I’ve never been disappointed with Sher-e-Punjab, which is conveniently near my house.

Anything you want to add – coming attractions, talk to the food-loving public?

I have a big event coming up this week that’s open to the public: The launch of my memoir, Getting Naked for Money: An Accidental Travel Writer Reveals All.

It’s at the Carriage House from 5-7 p.m. and Janos Wilder is going to be introducing me, which is very exciting, and gratifying. Location: 125 S. Arizona Ave (downtown).

The reading itself is at 6 p.m., but there will be book signings and general schmoozing before and after.

KZ: Having proofread the book, all I can say is: “You did what? She did that? Really? You never quite know your friends until your read their memoirs. It was laugh out loud funny, somewhat self-depreciating and eye opening especially regarding the world of publishing and other juicy slices of life.
