Baking a Difference

Icing Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. Simple things, like a birthday cake, are luxuries to a family battling illness. Their goal is to create a custom cake for the ill child, or their sibling, that provides a temporary escape from worry and creates a positive memory during a difficult time.

Our friend Carla made this colorful and detailed tortoise birthday cake for a family in need. Carla makes the most extraordinary cakes. Once for an 80th birthday for a friend’s mom, she made a cake and frosting to look like a vintage vanity set. And she makes the best chocolate cake and chocolate frosting in the whole wide world.

Obon Sushi & Ramen
Let’s hope this location is not cursed. Gio Taco didn’t make it but hopefully Obon can. Downtown needs a Japanese restaurant as On a Roll recently closed. One can never have too many good Japanese restaurants. My personal favorites are RA Sushi and Kazuko. Circle of Food has been craving ramen and buns so we welcome the new comer.

Ice Cream Showdown Donation
Because of the generosity of nine local creameries who brought their a-game ice cream and the crowds who attended, Maynards Market & Kitchen was able to raise $4,702.14 for the the Ben’s Bells Project which was triple the amount from the first Ice Cream Showdown last year. Wow!

Pizzeria Bianco
I finally made it to Bianco (although last year visited the Scottsdale location) for pizza a few weeks ago during the pouring rain. Circle of Food doesn’t like to wait so a friend and I thought we’d go before the UA students came back. While the website said open 4 to 9 PM, a note was posted on the door announcing summer hours 5 to 10 PM. Annoying. So we went next door to Playground for satisfying cocktails made by an attentive bartender.

Tucson has good pizza (Reilly’s, Vero Amore, Zona 78, Falora to name a few), I have to admit there was something magical about Bianco dough and all ingredients popped with freshness. Now if I could just eat my arugula on a pizza, all would be right with the world.
