Pick a Peck of Peppers
The Tucson Village Farm has wheelbarrows full of fresh peppers for $1/pound. All you have to do is U-Pick on Tuesday/August 4 from 5 to 7 PM. Aside from peppers there is basil, eggplant, okra, squash, onion, chili peppers, summer greens, eggs, cucumbers, tomatoes, local honey, and many assorted herbs at 4210 N. Campbell Avenue.
Tucson Village Farm is a youth-centered working urban farm. Our seed to table program is designed to reconnect young people to a healthy food system, teach them how to grow and prepare fresh food, and empower them to make healthy choices.

Ascension Café Closed
Ascension Café closed August 1. They truly were farm-to-table. From their Facebook page: “Blessings greater Tucson and beyond. We at Food For Ascension Café have come to the difficult decision at this time to put this beautifully-created café on pause, closing our doors as a café for the time being. Our last day open is this evening, Saturday August 1, 2015. We discovered that there just is not enough understanding of the true meaning of “slow food” to support what we were doing in the Café in Tucson to justify the time and energy we were putting into it.
We do plan on opening our doors in the near future at our home at Avalon Gardens in the Tubac/Tumacacori area in Santa Cruz County. We will let you all know of our opening, which we plan in the next few months. Meanwhile, where the Café is now will become an extension of the Sea of Glass Center for the Arts (7th Street between 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue). Stay tuned for activities there, including an extensive gallery of transformational and avant-garde art.”
Everyday Circle of Food sees too many food recalls. For instance, some wrapped Kraft cheese singles are causing a choking hazard; cilantro grown in Mexico is causing intestinal infections for consumers because workers have no indoor toilet facilities; and caramel apples may be causing listeria. And while this is not a food safety issue, one consumer is suing the maker of almond milk because the beverage only has 2% almonds.
Return of the Mermaids
Use your imagination. Even though we’re in the desert, some people can dream of blue waterfalls and sexy mermaids and mermen. The evening parade plus all day family-friendly events take place on Saturday August 8. Check out the Facebook page and this Thursday’s Caliente (Arizona Daily Star) for who, what happens, where downtown and on 4th Avenue. There’s even a mermaid boutique, stilt walking mermaids and underwater orchestra. The more mermaids the merrier.
