Blu Wine & Cheese Opens First Location  – November 23-24, 2013

Tucson, Ariz— Tucsonans coming back from trips abroad and to U.S. coastal areas have wondered “why don’t we have cheese shops like other cities?” The wait is over. Cheesemonger Tana Fryer is preparing to launch three locations within the next four months. Blu: The Cheese Shop at Alfonsos in St. Philip’s Plaza celebrates its Grand Opening the weekend of November 23-24, 2013.

Blu opened for business in October 2012 operating out of a community kitchen space, and has developed a following among Tucson food lovers. Several Tucson restaurants feature Blu’s cheese on their menus, including Lodge on the Desert, Riley’s Craft Pizza, Renee’s Organic Oven, and Falora.

Blu at Alfonsos will carry a large variety of cut-to-order specialty cheeses, focusing on award-winning, artisanal and farmstead cheeses from across the United States. A selection of imported cheeses will also be available. Cheesemongers on site will offer daily samples and information about the unique products in an accessible and welcoming environment. Catering, specialty food trays and gift boxes are also available.

Fryer explains, “The growth happening in the specialty cheese movement in this country is really exciting. We want to bring that excitement to Tucson, and we are thrilled to be launching our first location in partnership with Alfonsos Gourmet Olive Oil and Balsamics. Come taste and fall in love.”

Fryer was trained as a cheesemonger at Pastoral Artisan Cheese, Bread and Wine, the Midwest’s premier retail cheese shop, and is a member of the American Cheese Society. Previously she owned and managed a boutique consulting firm working with values-based small businesses and nonprofits. She has a master’s degree in leadership and mission.

Blu at Alfonsos is located inside Alfonsos Gourmet Olive Oil and Balsamics at St. Philip’s Plaza, and will be open Monday-Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 9-3.

The company’s flagship shop, Blu: A Wine & Cheese Stop, will open at The Mercado San Agustin this winter. The Mercado location will feature a Wine Bar offering cheese boards and gourmet sandwiches, as well as a retail shop carrying cheese, charcuterie, wine and beer.

A third Blu location will open in Oro Valley in February 2014.
