I was among the 850 people who judged. While I loved the layered San Carlos margarita, I chose Kingfisher Restaurant’s margarita that tasted of ginger & mint. Normally, I wouldn’t put those flavors together but it sort of reminded me of the very best icy ginger ale with a sprig of mint on the rocks. Of course, Kingfisher’s margarita was more complex with its memory lingering throughout the evening.

My friend couldn’t stop raving about pomegranate margarita from Lodge on the Desert. That was my second favorite.

Tucson, AZ –The 7th Annual World Margarita Championship™ which took place on Friday, October 26, on the grounds of the Tucson Museum of Art, featured a record 18 Tucson Original “Mixologists” in a lively competition to capture one of two awards offered at the annual celebration of tequila and the quest for the “perfect” Margarita. The innovative cocktails were created from scratch, featuring two entries at a time, “Iron Chef-style,” in front of the crowd and a panel of judges.

All entrees were also judged by the over 850 attendees at the event who turned in their ballots at the end of the evening.

Two took home the top prizes:

Julio Blanco from Marinaterra Resort in San Carlos won the People’s Choice award for the second year in a row and Ryan Clark from Lodge on the Desert won the Judges Award for the World’s Greatest Margarita.

The People’s Choice award for the second year in a row, created by Julio Blanco at Marinaterra Hotel & SPA San Carlos, was the “San Carlos Margarita” , a fresh and spicy blend of original ingredients, including Chamoy, Tajin Chile , Dry Mango, citrus juices and Tequila Penasco.

World’s Greatest Margarita – the “Tatas & Tequila Margarita” created by Ryan Clark, Executive Chef/Mixologist from Lodge on the Desert, was a unique blend of ingredients including pomegranate jam, pomegranate white balsamic vinegar, citrus flavors and Tequila Penasco.

A fun time was had by all. The temperature was perfect. Harvest’s chocolate Guinness cupcakes were delicious as well as the spicy turkey taco from Jonathan’s Cork.
