National Dairy Month: Is Butter Better?

June is National Dairy Month. In recent years butter has been given a bad rep, but it’s making a comeback.  Man-made butter substitutes like margarine and vegetable oil spreads are filled with trans-fats. Dr Andrew Weil states, “Butter is certainly better for you than margarine, and used moderately, can be part of a healthy diet.”

So what makes butter better? The following facts are courtesy of Twisted Butter.

• Vitamins: Butter is a rich source of vitamin A which is easily absorbed and necessary for a wide range of bodily functions, such as developing and maintaining good vision and keeping the endocrine system in top shape. Fat-soluble vitamins E,K and D are also in butter.

• Minerals: Ounce for ounce, butter has more selenium, a trace mineral and powerful antioxidant, per gram than either whole wheat or garlic. Butter also supplies iodine and Vitamin A, both needed by the thyroid gland.

• Fatty Acids: Butter has appreciable amounts of butyric acid, a fatty acid also classified as an anti-carcinogen, used by the colon as an energy source. Lauric acid is a potent antimicrobial and antifungal substance. Butter also contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which gives excellent protection against cancer. Butter also has small but equal amounts of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, the so-called essential fatty acids.

• Cholesterol: Despite all of the misinformation you may have heard, cholesterol is needed to maintain intestinal health, but is also needed for brain and nervous system development in the young. Again, this emphasizes the need for cholesterol-rich foods for children. Human breast milk is extremely high in saturated fat and cholesterol.

A steady diet combined with exercise and using common sense is key to promoting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
