Where Local and Global Appetites Collide

Little Pies; Big Tastes

Miniature desserts are all the rage these days, and with good reason. What better way to satisfy a sweet craving with the worry of overindulging?

And so when the people at Ulysses Press sent me a copy of  “Mini Pies”,  I was intrigued. Written by Christy Beaver and Morgan Greenseth of Seattle’s Mini Empire Bakery, this tiny baking book is chock full of pretty little treats.  You’ll find recipes for everything from bottoms to toppings. Fruit pies, cream pies, savory pies, nut pies, a variety of crusts and some interesting toppings are all part of the package.

The photos are gorgeous – the Sweetheart Cherry Pie pic will set your mouth a-watering.

But Mini Pies isn’t just about sweet stuff.  The Savory and Nut Pie chapter has recipes for a Dilled Spinach Cup Quiche and a Caramelized Onion. Olive & Thyme Tart.

Crusts include a graham cracker crust, a vegan crust, a gluten-free crust and a cheddar cheese crust. There’s even a recipe called Pie in a Jar. And there are step-by-step photos on how to make the perfect pie crust.

Toppings recipes include one for mini-meringue and another for basil whipped cream.

Making a passel of these pies would be a great change to your holiday baking or a fun project for you and the kids.
