Tucson Festival of Books: Food for the Soul, Foodies Fun

On March 12 and 13, the third annual Tucson Festival of Books returns with an expanded lineup of authors in the most popular literary genres — including FOOD.

The 2011 Tucson Festival of Books is a non-profit event benefiting literacy programs in Southern Arizona. Admission to the event is free.  The Culinary Area schedule is listed below.  For further information, including complete event schedules and maps, check out the website.

Exciting news for foodies: the Culinary Area, sponsored by Arizona Public Media (AZPM), will host cooking demos with Daisy Martinez of PBS/Food Network, Steve Raichlen of PBS/Primal Grill, and Barbara Fairchild, former editor-in-chief of Bon Appetit Magazine and author of the new “Bon Appetit Desserts.” Such an array of chefs, food writers and culinary experts will be present that the event could be called the “Festival of Cooks!”

Most events are on the Culinary stage. Others with a room number are held in the Integrated Learning Center (ILC).

Check out the fabulous edible offerings if you get hungry, thirsty or want a bite of nosh, food from some of Tucson’s most favorite restaurants and nibbles will be available for purchase.

Circle of Food owner & blogger Karyn Zoldan will be on the Food Writing 101 panel on Sunday as well as at the Tucson Citizen booth from noon to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Featuring:  Jeannette Bessinger, whole foods nutritionist and “Real Food Mom”, author of “Simple Food for Busy Families: The Whole Life Nutrition Approach”; and Janos Wilder, Author, James Beard Award-Winner and 2011 Nominee, Chef/Owner of Janos, J-Bar and Downtown Kitchen & Cocktails, three of Tucson’s premier restaurants.

Featuring Panelists: Rita Connelly, freelance food writer, and co-author of the second edition of “The Insider’s Guide to Tucson”; Barbara Fairchild, former editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit magazine, author of the new book “Bon Appétit Desserts”; Edie Jarolim, contributing dining editor of Tucson Guide and Tucson editor for the Zagat guides; and Janos Wilder, James Beard Award-Winner and 2011 Nominee, Chef/Owner of some of Tucson’s top restaurants.

Featuring: Shirley Fong-Torres, author of “The Woman Who Ate Chinatown, a San Francisco Odyssey.” A TV chef and host of national and international culinary tours, her company hosts “WOKing” tours of Chinatown.

Featuring: Pamela Hamilton, editor and publisher of Edible Phoenix magazine, a quarterly publication dedicated to seasonal, local food; Barry Infuso, Chef and “Dean of Cuisine” for the Pima Community College Culinary Arts Program and a food writer whose work appears in Tucson Lifestyle magazine; Karyn Zoldan, Tucson blogger at the “deliriously dish-y” Circle of Food, and writer of the To Market to Food Market column at tucsoncitizen.com.

Featuring: Stephen Fried, author of “Appetite for America: How Visionary Businessman Fred Harvey Built a Railroad Hospitality Empire that Civilized the Wild West”; and John Sharpe, chef/owner of the award-winning Turquoise Room at La Posada (one of the few original Fred Harvey hotels) in Winslow, Ariz. He is the author of “La Posada’s Turquoise Room Cookbook.”

Featuring: Pamela Hamilton, editor and publisher of Edible Phoenix magazine, a quarterly publication dedicated to seasonal, local food, representing the new book “Edible”; Mary Paganelli Votto, co-author with Frances Manuel of “From I’itoi’s Garden: Tohono O’odham Food Traditions; and Amy Valdés Schwemm of Desert Harvesters, a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization that encourages the planting of indigenous, food-bearing shade trees, and educates the public on harvesting and processing, with their book “Eat Mesquite!”.
