February 1 – Shochu Tasting
Our Tuesday Tasting for February is going to be at the Scottsdale Roka Akor.  ROKA AKOR is located within the Artesia Community – 7299 N. Scottsdale Road

Members: $18 per person
Guests: $25 per person

Please join in for a special talk on Shochu….and some light Japanese fare. Shochu is a vodka-like (although less strong) distilled spirit which dates back to 14th century Japan. As shochu became increasingly popular because of its health benefits as a tonic, different Japanese regions began making their own variations using local produce such as rice, barley and sweet potato.  There is much to learn/taste.

Menu: Crispy Fried Squid with Chili and Lime, Spicy Avocado Roll and Grilled Sweet Potato with Ginger Teriyaki

New Members Please arrive at 5:30.  Tasting Discussion begins at  6 pm.

February 5 – 2nd Annual Tomato Fest – 10 am -3 pm

Tomatoes can be hard to grow in the desert.  Come  learn all the ins and outs of being successful with tomatoes. Classes taught by local tomato experts on tomato trouble shooting, seed saving in your garden, and companion planting to get the best results from your tomatoes.  (classes are $10 each, or all 3 for $25)

The class schedule is as follows:

10 am – Seed saving
11:30 am – Companion planting
1 pm – Troubleshooting tomato problems

Once you have your tomatoes growing and are harvesting them what do you do with them?  Local chefs from  Quiescence and Tarbells restaurants dishes to  make with those beautiful orbs.

Join the Slow Food Book Club on Wednesday February 16 at 6:30 pm meeting at the Downtown Phoenix Market to discuss Mark Bittman’s book Food Matters. The Phoenix Market is located at 14 E. Pierce Street in Phoenix.  Sue Thomas will lead the discussion.
