If you go to the University of Toledo, you are given a rocket card that is used for everything. It can get you into the workout center, swipe you into your dorm, get you into special computer labs, and even contains money on it. This is all great and makes campus run smoother, but the money part is not all good.
In my opinion, the rocket and dining dollars put onto the card promote unhealthy eating. The majority of people who have this money on their card is freshman because it comes with every meal plan, but also upper class put their extra loan money on here sometimes, and also parents load it up all the time for their kids.
First, dining dollars can only be used on campus, but there are many options for what it can be used for. Some include convenience stores on campus, Starbucks, Subway, Chinese, a salad place, and KFC. The rocket dollars can be used at all these places plus certain off campus places such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Campus Oasis, Taco Bell and Arby’s.
Yes, this card is very convenient and nice to have, but almost all the places listed are BAD for you. If the dollars come with the meal plans, you are paying for them and might as well use them, so why not go get fast food late at night? It’s what everyone does.
I know some of my friends that will go through $200 to $300 in less than a month on top of having a meal plan. They complain and say how hard it is to save the money. Funny thing though is that when I was a freshman and had these dining and rocket dollars I did not use almost any of them. I saved them and bought school supplies at the book store, and used them for my friends and family when they would come to visit so they could get food for free.
Also there is a loop hole with these rocket dollars. They can be used at the gas station near campus for food, gas, alcohol and cigarettes. I do not think student loans should be able to be used for alcohol and cigarettes but i guess it happens.
