The Food Rendezvous begins this Saturday:  August is a busy month for food-focused events in southern California, and this year a new event is coming to the Los Angeles community: The Food Rendezvous. Offering a monthly marketplace for makers of artisanal and handcrafted foods, the initial Food Rendezvous event will include a range of cooking demonstrations, a cookbook swap, the opportunity to purchase food products, a themed movie screening, and a jam and jelly contest. Authors (and Slow Food supporters) Amelia Saltsman, Martha Rose Shulman, Judi Gerber will attend to discuss and demonstrate their work and to sign copies of their books.

When: Saturday, August 28, 2010 from 4 until 10 p.m.
Where: SPARC (Social and Public Art Resource Center), 685 Venice Boulevard, Venice, CA 90291
Cost: Tickets are $10 per person if purchased in advance through the Food Rendezvous website or $15 per person at the door.


Mexican Cooking with Nancy Zaslavsky: Nancy Zaslavsky is known to many in the Slow Food community as a great local resource for information about Mexican cooking. Her tours and hands-on cooking classes are lively and much in demand, and so we’re pleased to share news of upcoming events:

Locally, Nancy will be conducting two classes in September: On Sunday September 12, she’ll guide her class through the preparation of chiles en Nogada in a hands-on class at Surfas in Culver City from 2 to 4 p.m. Reservations are available by calling 310.440.8877, the cost is $75.

On the following Sunday, September 19, Nancy will teach a demonstration-style cooking class and host a dinner at BreadBar on Third Street. For $65 per person, those attending will learn how to prepare and will enjoy veal meatballs in ancho chile sauce, mini Caesar salad, chicken breast with a Puebla-style green pumpkin seed sauce, chile mole brownies, and vanilla bean ice cream. Last, but not least, Nancy is hosting a one-week trip to Oaxaca that will coincide with the Day of the Dead. From October 27 through November 2, Nancy will lead a group to Oaxaca on a trip that includes tours, tastings, meals, and hands-on classes. Information about this tour as well as other tours already scheduled for 2011 are now available online.
