Tucson, Ariz— The Tucson Culinary Foundation is pleased to announce that Barbara Fairchild, editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit Magazine, will be the first-ever recipient of the Monica Flin Award, to be presented at the 8th Annual Tucson Culinary Festival. The award is named for the extraordinary woman who was the great aunt of Carlotta Flores and founder of El Charro Café in 1922. Monica Flin’s long legacy bestowed a significant awareness to the rest of the country that the “Old Pueblo” had much to offer both in the culinary world and culturally.
The Monica Flin award will be given annually at the Tucson Culinary Festival to a nationally significant figure in the world of food and wine who has through his/her work helped to bring attention and appreciation of the rich culinary treasures of Tucson. Carlotta Flores was thrilled upon hearing about the award. “What an honor to have such a prestigious award named after my darling beloved “Tia” Monica Flin! She truly would be smiling and toasting all of you who have added so much to the culinary World of Tucson, and other parts of the world. One of her favorite toasts was “Pa’ Arriba, Pa’ Abajo, Pa’ Centro, y Pa’ Dentro!!” (Can someone please comment with a translation?)
A prominent leader in the epicurean world, Barbara began her career at Bon Appétit as an editorial assistant in 1978. She has been editor-in-chief of the magazine for ten years. Ms. Fairchild was inducted into the James Beard Foundation’s “Who’s Who in American Food and Beverage” in May 2000. She is a member of over a dozen professional organizations (including the American Society of Magazine Editors) and devotes time to charities such as the Jonsson Cancer Center at UCLA, Careers Through Culinary Arts Program, the Los Angeles Library Council, and the Motion Picture & Television Fund. Frequent television appearances include NBC’s Today Show and Dateline NBC, CNN, MSNBC, A&E’s Biography, Food Network (Iron Chef America, The Next Food Network Star, and America’s Top Restaurants, among others), and Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, and Master Chef.
Ms. Fairchild has also authored The Bon Appétit Cookbook, Bon Appétit Fast Easy Fresh, and Bon Appétit Desserts. Several will be available for sale—and Ms. Fairchild is signing—at both the Reserve Tasting on Friday, October 29 and the Grand Tasting on Saturday, October 30.
