Tucson: Dining on Broadway Boulevard

Broadway Blvd in Tucson will soon be exploding with some new restaurants.

Pita Jungle
Amazingly, Pita Jungle (with Phoenix locations) will be opening in the once rather decadent 58 Degrees at Williams Centre. I would think you’d have to sell a whole lot of pitas to pay the rent. According to a recent post on Craig’s List, Pita Jungle is now hiring and hopes to open by September or October. The New Times in Phoenix wrote a funny review about Pita Jungle geared to us Tucsonans.

BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery
I drive down Broadway frequently and my peripheral vision must really be shot as I never noticed that the building looks like it’s ready to go, from the outside anyway. One day it was a vacant lot and the next, BJ’s. The Brewery resides in the former El Paso BBQ space on the SE corner of Broadway/Craycroft. According to the website, BJ’s will open sometime in August but that probably means September. Another BJ’s is located at 4270 N. Oracle Road.

Monkey Burger
Speaking of jungles, I recently ate at Monkey Burger which is also located at Williams Centre in what was formerly Intermezzo. Monkey Burger is locally owned and has some of the freshest food around using local purveyors and a mural artist. The wall has an amazingly colorful graffiti-like mural featuring a catsup and mustard bottle in love. You must try the fried pickles which are somewhat reminiscent of Nonie’s fried pickles but with their own identity and the best sweet potato waffle fries in Tucson. Of course, the burgers as well as the salads sparkle. Here’s a nod to DM: 10 percent military discount on Monday-Thursday.

Monkey Burger will also be opening a second location downtown in the former Burger City space (where they used to be) later this month. The space will have more pizazz than previously and is located across from the Ronstadt bus area.

Other restaurants that I like and frequent on Broadway are Zivaz and Susie’s Cafe. The latter is next to Nadine’s Bakery. Susie’s serves really plentiful and delicious grilled sandwiches (made with Nadine’s bread) and soup and chili in bread bowls. Every sandwich comes with a bag of chips and a chocolate fudge brownie. Susie’s doesn’t have a website but the phone number is 881-1363 and is only open until 3 p.m. Monday-Saturday at 4553 E. Broadway Blvd.
