Where Local and Global Appetites Collide

Exotic Coffee Made from Cat Poo – Really

Here’s a headline that caught my eye :

Fort Myers cafe to serve costly cat poo coffee

For you java-jaded folks who have tried every coffee drink at Starbucks, cat poo coffee is — I bet — nothing you’ve ever swallowed so far.

A few facts: (according to Wikipedia)

Civet coffee is coffee made from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet. Some people refer to civets as cats or weasels.

The civets eat the coffee berries, but the beans inside pass through their system undigested. The berries are defecated.

The beans are washed, and given only a light roast so as to not destroy the complex flavors that develop through the process.

This practice happens on the islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali, the Indonesian Archipelago. and in the Philippines.

The cafe in Fort Myers will be selling cat poo coffee; a 12-ounce cup will cost you $20.

That all sounds pretty disgusting but what makes matters worse is that animal cruelty is involved.
