Where Local and Global Appetites Collide

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Comes to Beavercreek Ohio – My Home Town

Over the weekend, I attended a family get-together and a friend of the family told me that Extreme Makeover:  Home Edition was going to build a house in Beavercreek, Ohio — my hometown!  The announcement is going to be made public July 31 — that’s when they will go and knock on the winner’s door and “surprise” them.

Prior to that, he told me, four families were told that they were in the running to be selected.  That way, it is a semi-surprise to the winner.  Obviously this is a necessity to prepare them to be packed and ready-to-go for their week away from the job site.

I learned that there already was a previous public announcement to get the 300 volunteers that they need to work with the professional construction company (Coventry Homes) that they are using to manage it all.

I can’t wait to drive by the job site!  Can you just imagine the coordination involved for everything from feeding the volunteers to controlling the chaos just keeping everyone from running into each other!  I’ll post pictures.  Stay tuned.

You can read the article here

  1. Can’t wait to see your pictures! Can you take some before pictures so we can see what the house and the neighborhood looks like?

  2. Inside info. on this – hear it will be on Darst Road (or very near) – will need to demolish a home since the foundation needs to be in place for the work.

  3. Karyn, my family friend also said that Exteme Makeover has each community have their own separate website for the event — as was the case with yours. I was surprised to see that the Tucson website does not seem to be complete. They don’t have “after” photos. It is almost as if they lost interest once the event was over.

Going on the your naming convention “www.ExtremeMakeoverTucson.com”, I tried “www.ExtremeMakeoverDayton.com” and the site is not up yet.

  4. Just go to the county offices and see where a demolition permit has been taken out for. But really, the tip came from one of the companies that is donating labor/materials. They may have told them Darst (not the real street) so they know the general area where they’ll need to be.

  5. I live right off Darst Road!!! I sure hope it’s not going to be over here!!! lol. I heard they work 24 hours a day, and the traffic would be GOD AWFUL! None the less, if I hear or see anything, I will take pictures of the home =)

  6. When you think about it, the choice has to have laready been made. They come in with pre-fab walls, etc. They need time to build these offsite.

I’ve picked three possible locations, the house right behind the beer barn, one on a corner on the left traveling south on Darst and the other to the right of the newest house built on Darst, further down on the right.

    We’ll see.

  7. Anon, I know which house you are talking about on Darst! They had it for sale for awhile. I think that the family that lives there was just waiting for Indian Ripple to get popular and was hoping that they would buy that lot for commercial. It seems like they intentionally let it run down. I have a friend who works for the Beavercreek police dept. He said that they have no idea where it will be, but the were told to expect to be on call all weekend and working overtime. TY and the Crew are staying at the Hilton in Beavercreek where my friend works. The crew has been here for a week, they partied at the Masque in Dayton this weekend. But TY is not here yet. It will be interesting to see!!! I applied to be a volunteer, I hope I get to =)

  8. I live in West Carrollton, very close to Beavercreek, and my friend’s aunt agreed to take her and I to the house on reveal day! :))) Her aunt is going to pick us up and take us there, and 6 in the morning so we get close to the front! Im super pumped! :D:D:D
My mom’s friend works for the company that is going to put in the countertops, so I’m going to make him tell me what the address is 😀

When i do find out where the house is, i’ll let you guys know! 🙂

  9. While the Darst road rumor has been circulating, i have heard of another rumor of the site being out off Kemp Rd…..possibly on Van Oss Drive.

  10. My husband just called me and told me that it was on Carthage Dr off of Shakertown. He said he drove by and the road was all blocked off and there were police everywhere and news crews all over the chruch parking lot. We also have a friend that is going to be one of the plumbers working on the house!

  11. Thanks for posting the info and pic’s Mary. This house is 3 miles from my work. I am sure it is very hectic right now.

  12. This came off extrememecoventryhome.com

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and more than 1,500 workers and community volunteers will work around the clock to make a family’s dream come true for the Terpenning Family, 548 Carthage Dr, Beavercreek.

The Terpenning Family received the “door knock” from Ty Pennington and the Design team this morning (Thursday July 30, 2009) informing them that their home was selected to receive an extreme makeover. The “Braveheart Walk,” also kickoff of the build to be held this afternoon. Demolition and construction are scheduled for Saturday, August 1.

  14. Hi I’m Abby. Just letting you know that this Extreme Makeover Edition is very cool to me. First they chose the house behind my Aunt and Uncles house. Second I saw pictures of my cousins and one of my uncle. My aunt was offered a interview but she passed it up. Kellie Pickler is in Beavercreek and she’s a celebrity. Third I’m help out with it and passing out water becuase we were offered to do that job. And fourth my cousins are going to be on tv.And fifth they are in my hometown Beavercreek. Woo! I’m 12 by the way lol.

  15. Abby, thanks for visiting. Glad to you have you at any age! Take a look at the posts written by Torie Nicholas – she was 18 when she started writing for this blog. She’s at Toledo University. Feel free to ask her any questions.

  16. I live in Centerville near by Beavercreek, I heard you can go to the site by parking at the old FOrd dealership at Beaver Valley and there are shuttles that take people over there, especially since the roads are all blocked. SO, you can’t even drive by the house.

  17. i heard for the reveal that you have to have ticket or the police wont let you in to see it. is this true and if so where do we get tickets for the reveal i live few streets down.

  18. I have not heard about any requirement for a ticket to the reveal. I did hear that they recommend you be there at 7:30 AM to get near the front for the “Move That Bus” moment. Forget it. I’d like to do it but who has that much time to waste.

  19. I live around the corner from the consturction site. Let me assure you that the noise, lights have not been a problem. The makeover team and their entire crew have been nothing but top notch.
They assured us (neighbors)that if we had any concerns to let them know and they would take care of it immeditely. I have had none.
I’m honered and thrilled they came to our area. I wish the best to the Terpenning family.

  20. “The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a plan to set up a new “volunteer corps” and consider whether “a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people” should be developed.
The legislation also refers to “uniforms” that would be worn by the “volunteers” and the “need” for a “public service academy, a 4-year institution” to “focus on training” future “public sector leaders.” The training, apparently, would occur at “campuses.” The vote yesterday came on H.R. 1388 which reauthorizes through 2014 the National and Community Service Act of 1990 and the Domestic Volunteer Service Act of 1973, acts that originally, among other programs, funded the AmeriCorps and the National Senior Service Corps.
Many, however, are raising concerns that the program, which is intended to include 250,000 “volunteers,” is the beginning of what President Obama called his “National Civilian Security Force” in a a speech last year in which he urged creating an organization as big and well-funded as the U.S. military. He has declined since then to elaborate

the family seems very worthy of the makeover iam however disappointed the show has felt it neccesary to tow this facist party line

  21. My friend has invited me to come along with her to see the big reveal tomarrow, but what time is the reveal? When will it be over? Is there going to be anything set up that you would need money for? What would you say would be the 2 or 3 most useful things to bring? He he… So many questions! XD

-chloe aka “the ignorant last-minute planner”

  22. Just got back from the site and watching Kelli Pickler, wow what a blast we had. The home is beautiful, they all put in so much effort and did a wonderful job, the family will be so blessed and I am so glad that it went to a family in need.

  23. James in not wheelchair confined . he isnt paralyzed he has polio .. there are families in far more need .. Im happy for the kids as im sure they will get a free college education of course. but please.. I know his life.. and yes hes been thru trying times but good lord.. they are not destitude.. I feel for his brother but hey.. i work in the medical field and have seen horrible situations that i wish these ppl and their families could have had this opportunity.. so sad. They got a free ride ,, and all this publicity.. well i still credit EMOHD for everything they do.

  24. First off to the great people of Beavercreek and surrounding area-bless you for helping with a very worthwhile project. You will be blessed.
Secondly, whatever… I feel very sorry for you. Instead of slamming EMHE for helping out a family in need you chose to be negative. Try looking at this as something positive and maybe an opportunity for others to catch the desire to help improve someone’s life.
I have volunteered on six builds in the past 3 years and would do more if I didn’t have to work to save up the cash/vacation time to do this. If you feel that someone else deserved a makeover more than this family why don’t YOU do something to change their situation?

  25. If you read what i said VOLUNTEER.. i didnt not “slam EMHE!! DID I?? I watch that show every week.. dont put words in my mouth..

  26. This is a joke !!!!! Everyone wanting to volunteer, helpout, donate for this family who had a nice house makes a good income from the USAF where James works at.There family eats together sleeps in the same house makes family memmories. Yes were he works at!!!! and makes a good living for his family and just let me voice my opinion. He is not WC bound!!!! And by the way we live right down the street from this makeover and its amazing how everyone wants to help a FAMILY so called in need what about our neighbor, our friend, our employer, or maybe someone on the street a church member.. Who just lost there job due to a terminal illness and will loose there HOUSE, or what about your ill child who has to stay in hospital due to there house not being accesible for the sic child and has to stay apart from his parents and siblings at the age of 4 and mother feeling torn and father holding 3 jobs due to medical bills. You see people were talking about our community in Green county these are real stories of real people in need. I am a nurse in this area I see all kinds of people who are in need does any one give them a helping hand!!! Maybe if they were on TV they would get all the help they need . I applied for EMHE for a family in need here in Dayton Ohio alot like the stories you have heard on this blog and it was denied!!!!!! However this family who eats together, sleeps under same roof together, James goes to work makes a living for his family, had a beautiful house from the start now has it all !! What about all these oother families in need where is there help in need ? What happen to our Country I am a military wife as well I must say I learned somthing new its all about who you are and what butt you kiss !!!!!!!

  27. And by the way that family is now in crises care. THANKS EMHE for helping our families in need . My husband and I do a great amount of charity work and I have never seen a joke like this yea he has a disability but my GOD he works for the USAF and makes a great income to live in Beacercreek ohio. This is a slap in the face to all those people who are in crises care. So EVERYONE IN BEAVERCREEK WHO DONATED FOOD, TIME, MATERIALS to this circus because you wanted to feel important or maybe you wanted to get your face on tv with TY. Shame on you, remember he works for the Commmander thats who applied for the EHME is that why he was selected??? .I am just an American a nurse ,mother, military spouse, wife , and I donate my time to the school , and people in crises care . And my family in need I guess did not have a good story or enough bullshit to have been picked. On that note I will not watch EMHME again I will cont to help the NEEDY in our community. I do not know how this family can even show there face out in public remember what comes around goes around.

  28. You must keep in mind that these families are nominated by friends family and neighbors. Was the family that Outrage is talking about even nominated. EMHE cannot help ever family in the US they can only help those that are nominated. If not nominated they won’t know if someone else is in more need. So just be happy that we have people out there willing to do so much for families out there.
