It seems that agave syrup also known as agave nectar is the new darling of the sugar sweetener world.

Agave syrup has been popping up as an ingredient in cocktails and desserts and other recipes.

What makes agave syrup so attractive is that it has a lower GI (glycemic index). Glycemic index is the speed at which food turns into blood glucose. The slower the journey, the less the spike in blood sugar. While most sugars and sweeteners are prohibitive — agave syrup appears to be safe for diabetics. (Check with your healthcare professional.)
