Food Recall Blog: Cookie Trays from Stop and Shop

Nov. 30, 2007–On November 21, 2007, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company announced a recall of Stop & Shop’s 2-pound cookie trays produced by Luigi’s Bakery and sold in Stop & Shop stores in Connecticut and New York.

The cookies were recalled because the label did not list as ingredients artificial colors including FD&C Yellow #5, which can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.

Upon investigation by regulatory agencies, the cookies were found to contain milk and sulfur dioxide, both of which were not listed on the label and can cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals.

Sulfur dioxide is a colorless gas with a sharp irritating odor. What the heck is it doing in cookies?

The cookies were packaged on a plastic plate with cellophane over wrap and a Luigi’s Bakery Sticker affixed to them. They have a UPC code of   20549910000.
