Recipes: Spiced Candied Walnuts and Poppy Seed Orange Bread

The spiced candied walnuts make great hostess gifts and the poppy seed orange bread is a nice treat for guests who spent the night and wake up to steaming mugs of coffee or hot chocolate and a bit of breakfast bread nosh. Or invite some friends over for mulled wine, poppy seed orange bread, and conversation. Yum.

Spiced Candied Walnuts


1 egg white

4 cups walnut halves

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon Spice Hunter Cayenne Pepper

1/2 teaspoon Spice Hunter Ground Saigon Cinnamon

pinch salt, or more to taste

Preparation–Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix dry ingredients, set aside. In a large bowl combine nuts and egg white. Add to a large Ziploc bag, the dry ingredients. Toss until evenly distributed. Spread across greased cookie sheet and bake until golden, about 20 minutes. When cool, pack in an airtight jar. They will keep at room temperature for at least 2 weeks.

Poppy Seed Orange Bread


1/3 c. Spice Hunter Dutch Poppy Seeds

3/4 c. milk

1/4 c. butter

1 c. brown sugar

2 eggs

1-1/2 t. Spice Hunter Grated Orange Peel

2 c. whole wheat flour

2 t. baking powder

1/2 t. salt

1/4 t. Spice Hunter Ground Nutmeg

1/2 c. nuts, chopped

1/2 c. dried cranberries or raisins (optional)

Preparation–Soak poppy seeds in milk for several hours. Cream butter and brown sugar. Add eggs and orange peel. Combine dry ingredients and add to butter mixture alternately with milk and poppy seeds. Stir in nuts and cranberries or raisins (if desired). Pour batter into greased 9″ X 5″ loaf pan. Bake at 350 ° for 50-55 minutes.
