Where Local and Global Appetites Collide

Food Blog Humor: Food as Science Project / Mystery Meat

Here’s a heads up to food PR personnel — your choice of descriptive words is crucial as to whether or not a product sounds right or plain weird or downright humorous.

I received this press release from an agency in a major Midwest city. It said:

“Hi Karyn,

Remember Steak-Umm Sandwich Steaks?  They’re back!  But they’re not just for sandwiches anymore. Now, Steak-Umm can metamorphose into anything from breakfast burritos to shepherd’s pie, American chop suey, sloppy joes, and more.’  They cook in 90 seconds or less straight from the freezer, so they’re always there when you need them, and they’re just 120 calories per steak.

Would you be interested in recipes and samples?

I’ll pass on the samples. And no, I really don’t remember Steak Umm Sandwich Steaks. I must’ve slept through that lunch period.

Is it just me or would you want your meat to “metamorphose into anything”? I think not.

The Steak-Umm product on the Web site looks benign but just knowing that the meat can metamorphose into anything and perhaps a science project is a bit scary.

What food in your refrigerator has metamorphosed recently?

  1. That’s the kind of thing that happens when people fall in love with a thesaurus. They get the synonyms but not the reall meaning!
